革新的新製品開発の前段階における外部資源導入と新製品の上市後の成功との間の因果関係について構造方程式モデリングにより解析を行った結果、特に、化成品・素材・製薬企業の新製品アイデアの創出段階において、外部資源のうち産学連携が顕著に効果があることが判明した。また、外部資源導入先として大学、公的研究機関の割合が比較的高く、本格開発段階では、サプライヤーや一般企業(委託製造会社や提携企業)の割合が多くなる。上市直前の段階では、外部資源の導入はきわめて不活発であった。
