酵母に見出した「アセチル化酵素Mpr1」について、抗酸化機構の解明と高機能型酵素の創製に取り組んだ.その結果、プロリン代謝中間体が酸化ストレス下でのMpr1の基質であること、Mpr1を介した新規アルギニン経路が存在することなどを明らかにし、抗酸化機構の全容の解明につながる多くの重要な知見を得た. また、触媒活性や安定性を高めた変異型Mpr1を取得し、これらを発現する酵母では酸化ストレス耐性が大幅に向上することが示された.
