国際協力を通じ,動物プランクトン等の安定同位体比を用いて,北太平洋全域における気候変動に対する海洋生態系の経年変動メカニズムについて研究し,気候のフォーシングに対する生態系の応答が海域毎に異なることを明らかにした。親潮域においては,十年規模の気候の寒暖サイクルが海洋環境や低次生物生産量を変化させ,高次生物生産にまで影響を与えるメカニズムが明らかになった。これらの成果から,長期動物プランクトン試料の安定同位体比が海洋環境変動の指標として使用できる可能性を示した。
