胃酸(塩酸 : HCl)のプロトン(H^+)を輸送する蛋白質が、胃プロトンポンプ(H^+,K^+-ATPase)であることはよく知られているが、塩化物(塩素)イオン(Cl^-)を輸送する蛋白質については、これまで確定していなかった。本研究で、Cl-輸送蛋白質のKCC4とCLC-5が胃酸分泌機構に関与することを見出した。KCC4は胃酸分泌細胞のアピカル膜で、胃プロトンポンプと共に、空腹時(胃酸分泌休止時)の胃酸分泌に主として関与し、CLC-5は細管小胞膜上で、プロトンポンプと共に、摂食時(胃酸分泌刺激時)の胃酸分泌に関与することがわかり、空腹時と摂食時で異なる胃酸分泌機構が機能していることが明らかとなった。
