本研究は国立墓地と靖国神社、千鳥ヶ淵戦没者墓苑、遺族の戦死者祭祀を中心として日韓における戦没者追悼施設の伝統と近代的変容を明らかにすることを目的とする。二年目である2009年度には韓国との比較の観点から日本の戦死者祭祀における「遺骨」に関する考察を行なった。アメリカや韓国の事例では、戦死者の遺骨や霊魂をともに祀ることを原則とするが、日本の場合、伝統的な死者儀礼において「遺骨」は重要であり、不可欠なものであるにも関わらず、戦死者の遺骨は靖国神社で祭祀されることなく、霊魂のみが祀られた。つまり、靖国神社の祭神は国家の英霊として顕彰され、国家がその祭祀を行うことにより、その権威と正当性が保たれる一方、遺族にとって靖国神社に霊が留まっているものとする観念が太平洋戦争期には浸透、定着していった。こうした国家的祭祀の体系の成立は遺骨を祀る戦死者祭祀の成立が阻まれ、日本の死者儀礼に見られる祭祀対象としての遺骨崇拝や遺体崇拝の伝統を反映することはなかった。このような中央の戦死者祭祀体系に対して地方での戦死者祭祀の実態において調べることができた。静岡県のS地域では戦前は「ムラやマチの靖国」と理解されていた忠魂碑や忠霊が再建されたり新設され、その前で戦死者祭祀が行われた0忠魂碑の再建以外にも慰霊祭への市町村の関与の復活は戦後日本における政教分離の原則、またその実態があいまいなものにしていた。忠魂碑や神社の前で宗教儀礼が行われ、「英霊顕彰」へと重点が置かれることは地域の戦死者祭祀は靖国神社や護国神社の体系に繋がるものとして役割を果たしていると考えられる。
