The purpose of this study was to analyze skills for the appropriate shaping of toenails and the promotion of co/Led/nail growth, and evaluate their effects on standing and walking functions.1. Changes of the peripheral circulation and and walking after correct toenail dipping in healthy adultsA 3-month follow-up survey was performed in 19 healthy females aged 20-24 years. In each subject, no differences were observed in the way of using the soles during standing and walking between the initiation and completion of the survey. The foot surface temperature was lower at the completion of the survey. Foot-related problems developed in 2 subjects during the survey period. In both subjects, pain around the toenail developed due to an ingrown nail but disappeared after providing appropriate nail clipping care and did not recur.2. Effects of toenail clipping care in the elderlyToenail clipping care (and skin care when necessary) for about 3 months was provided for 19 healthy males and females aged ≧ 60 years. The subjects were classified into 3 groups according to foot-related problems (onychomycosis, callus). Concerning the sole pressure distribution and the site of the center of gravity, improvement such as standing over the center of the foot using the entire sole was observed in some subjects in Group 1 (with onychomycosis) and Group 2 (with calluses). Changes were negligible in Group 3 (without foot-related problems). These results suggested the favorable effects of toenail clipping care on the standing position of the elderly with calluses on the sole or nail ringworm.3. Future problemsToenail clipping care in this study suggested that the provision of correct toenail dipping care in addition to the appropriate shaping of toenails are useful for avoiding foot-related problems and favorably affect the standing position. However, evaluation parameters and measurement methods should be re-evaluated to generate more accurate results showing the effectiveness
