本研究は、家事のための道具の導入と、主婦の役割意識の関係を明らかにすることを目的としている。日本の家族の近代化を検討する際には、制度面だけでなく家庭で使用された生活財、つまり装置面の発達を理解しなければならない。なかでも家庭電化製品の使用は、近代以降の家族生活の前提条件であり、現代に至る家族関係の形成過程を説明する要素のひとつだといえる。そのため本研究では、家事のための電気器具の登場と家庭への導入に着目し、その過程で女性の役割意識や家事意識がどのように変化したか、またそれが家事道具の受容とどう結びついているかを研究した。研究方法としては、第一に家事道具に関する一次資料の分析を行った。新しい家事道具が受容されていく過程を、(1)新聞、(2)婦人雑誌・家事(家庭科)教科書、(3)電気関係の書籍・雑誌、(4)製造・販売された製品のパンフレット・電力会社やメーカーの社史、から整理した。特に、家庭電化の普及活動についてその背景と内容を明らかにするとともに、家族関係や主婦役割との関係で家事のあり方ついて、どのような言説がどのメディアにおいて語られているのかを分析した。第二に、高齢者を対象とした聞き取り調査を行った。調査は、戦前期に家庭電化が進んでいたとされる郊外住宅地在住者と、京都市在住者を対象に行った。家事機器導入の契機、家事機器が導入される以前と以後の変化、ライフステージ別の家事内容、家事技能の伝承実態の変化等を中心に調査を行った。以上の調査内容から、家事のための電化製品の導入と主婦役割について、家庭電化の普及活動での言説、新聞・雑誌等のマスメディアでの言説、聞き取り調査での語りを比較し考察を行った。
