スタインベック作品研究については、中期の作品、特にスタインベック作品のテーマの多くを見出すことが出来る1930年代後半から1940年代の作品を中心に行い、同時代の他の作家の作品との比較考察を行った。また、これまで出版されていない書簡等のマニュスクリプトについても、資料収集と分析を行った。スタインベック作品研究と平行して、アメリカ社会における労働状況と労働に関する概念について、さまざまの資料の収集を行い、それらの資料に基づいて、社会の変遷とともに労働の実態がどのように変化したのかについて、また、それに伴って労働観はどのように変化したのか、あるいはどのような点が変化せずに維持されたのかについて、考察を行った。さらに、19世紀末から20世紀初頭の世紀転換期におけるアメリカ西部地方、特にカリフォルニアの労働状況に着目し、性別、人種、年齢等さまざまな労働者の状況が記載されている当時の新聞記事や統計データ等を中心に、資料収集と分析を行った。資料収集に非常に多くの時間がかかり、収集した資料は相当な量になった。現在その整理と分析を鋭意進めているところであり、その分析結果を基にスタインベック文学と「労働」について論文にまとめる計画である。従来のスタインベック研究において行われてきた移動農業労働者の描写や大恐慌時代の労働市場の状況についての研究に加えて、もっと長い歴史的時間と幅広い社会的コンテクストにおいて、アメリカ文学の中の労働者の姿やスタインベック作品に描かれた「労働」をとらえることが、本研究の目的であるので、文学や文化の領域だけでなく、視野を広げて、歴史や経済など多分野にわたって幅広く資料収集を行ったことが特徴であり、重要な点である。資料については、日本国内で入手できたものもあったが、入手不可能なものについては、カリフォルニア大学などアメリカにおける研究機関が所蔵する資料を利用した。
