项目摘要

本年度は主に、現代アメリカ文化における「エイリアン的なもの」を、ポストヒューマンな領域に探求した。近年のアメリカ文化において「エイリアン」は常に巨大科学の暗黒面として現れてきており、外宇宙探査に対応する地球外知的生命体、人体という内宇宙研究に対応するバイオテクノロジカルな異星人などがイメージされてきた。それらは詰まるところ、科学技術の加速や暴走に対する畏れ/恐れを外宇宙に投影したアイコンだった。さらに最近、そうした畏怖の対象となりつつある科学技術がナノテクとサイボーグ技術であり、それらはともに生物と無生物との境界を侵す技術であるため、もはや「エイリアン的なもの」が異星「人」や異星「生物」として現れることはなく、もっと身近なところでの不安に反映される。結局、この「生物と無生物との境界」でのせめぎ合いは、すなわち人間そのものを変える可能性として、「ナノ粒子の環境への影響」、フランシス・フクヤマの言う「人間の終わり」などの議論で脅威として取り上げられる一方で、大衆文化的にはSF映画・小説に頻出するナノマシンやサイボーグという形を取っている。この変化は、リメイクされた映画『宇宙戦争』(1953,2005)やSF映画界での近年の宇宙ものの不振などに典型的に現れている。現在、「エイリアン的なもの」は人体改造や向精神薬、ナノ粒子やコンピュータプログラムのバグなどに存在し、それらは一方で各人の生活様式や文化と密接に結びついているため、エイリアン的畏怖が文化的摩擦と極度に接近しており、また他方では偶然性に結びついているために感情的鈍磨にも一役買っていると言えるだろう。
