Through first-hand examination of original objects along with fieldwork at key sites, we have accumulated fundamental resources concerning large hanging scroll paintings of shrine and temple origin stories and hagiographies of sect patriarchs from medieval times. We have also deepened the scholarly debate concerning the production and reception of medieval paintings of shrine and temple origin stories through analysis of issues of subject matter and function, and the relationships between various painting techniques in other genres such as painted Buddhist tales, illustrated handscrolls, and Shinto-Buddhist syncretic images. Furthermore, we have created tracings based on first-hand analysis of original works. Since they reflect the close reading of fine patterns derived from the cooperation of artists and scholars, they have proved an effective research method, and the results have been put to use in exhibitions and publications. Lastly, we held an international symposium with scholars of Japan working in other countries, endeavoring to communicate key issues in medieval painting.
