癌においてDNAメチル化によるがん抑制遺伝子の不活化が重要な役割をなしていることが判ってきている。今回の研究で、癌細胞のDNAメチル化異常の検索で癌の存在や癌の性質の診断が可能となることが示唆された。また、正常組織に蓄積したDNAメチル化異常を検索することで発癌リスクを診断することが可能となることが示唆された。さらに、腫瘍細胞の転写抑制を回復させる脱メチル化剤による治療の可能性が示唆された。
