レーダポーラリメトリを利用することで,昼夜・天候に依存せずに被災地観測,特に実地調査が難しい山地帯における土砂崩壊地域および被災住宅地域の観測を可能とした.航空機搭載および人工衛星搭載のセンサ(偏波合成開口レーダ)で取得される全偏波(4偏波)受信信号を適切に画像解析することで,受信電力を基本散乱モデル毎に正確に分解でき,また偏波チャネル間の相関も有効に利用できるようになった.このため,全受信電力の情報のみで識別していた従来の方法と比較し,分解能(周波数帯)が高くなくても土砂崩壊箇所や被災住宅群の状況把握が容易になった.
