本研究では、「都市ロマンス文学」という概念を措定し、17世紀から18世紀に至るイギリス文学の流れの中での、人間性と商業資本主義との連関を研究した。近代文明人が抱え込んだ理性と野性との葛藤は、王政復古期の貴族文化における「ウィット」が、新興市民階級の価値観である「センチメント」へ変容し、小説という新ジャンル創造へ向かう歴史的過程である。本研究では、文学ジャンル生成を惹起する都市文明の勃興と精神史の相関関係を明らかにした。
