窒素同化(硝酸同化)は, 光合成(炭酸同化)と並び独立栄養を営む植物に必須の代謝であるが, その過程で不可避的に亜硝酸を生じる。亜硝酸は旧くから植物生理学や作物学において細胞毒と認識されてきたが, その毒性の本質や作用機序は未だ詳らかでない。亜硝酸の同化や細胞内輸送に欠陥がある変異体植物の解析から, 硝酸同化の代謝中間体である亜硝酸から派生する活性窒素が, その毒性発現に関与する可能性が示唆された。
