肝不全への移植療法への応用を目指し、胚性幹(ES)細胞より肝細胞を分化・製造する方法を研究した。ブドウ糖は細胞の生存に必須である。ガラクトースは肝細胞のみがエネルギーに変換し、生存可能である。そこでブドウ糖を除き、ガラクトースを添加した培地でES細胞を培養したところ、肝芽細胞への分化が促進され、肝芽細胞が高率に収穫されることを明らかになった。
