悪性黒色腫細胞において、STAT3はIL-8遺伝子のプロモーター領域の-245 to -237 bpに存在する STAT3結合sequence TTCACCAAAに結合することにより、IL-8発現をgene transcriptionレベルで促進することができる可能性を示した。悪性黒色腫細胞では恒常的にSTAT3が活性化されているため、上記メカニズムでIL-8発現が恒常的に起こっていると考えられた。
