フランスでは、2002年2月の「国立予防考古学研究所l'Institut national de recherches archeologiques preventives」の発足後、この組織に属する考古学者がほぼ独占的に新規の発掘を行ない、情報と研究を独占しつつある。このため、この発掘管理体制の理解と、国立予防考古学研究所のメンバーとの研究上のつながりの構築の必要性が痛感されてきた。さらに、フランス各地における中世考古学研究の展開と現状を、現地調査に基づいて的確に把握するために、より広範な範囲での情報収集を目指した。今年度は、Archeologie medievaleを中心とする雑誌と研究書から得られる情報と同時に、2007年6月と2008年2月の2度にわたり、フランスでの現地調査を行い、フランスの中世考古学研究者からの情報の収集に努めた。その結果、依然として、法制度的にも国立予防考古学研究所を中心とした緊急考古学の発掘体制が継続し、大学研究者の考古学研究が停滞していることが確認された。しかし、そのなかで、緊急発掘後の重要史跡の保存と社会的な面での活用に関しては、各地の地方自治体が、主として、観光資源の整備と地元アイデンティティーの確立という観点から、規模や技術レヴェルの差はあれ、積極的に取り組んでいることを知った。その代表例は、ロワール地方のシノンの中世城砦遺跡であり、ここでは、丘のうえに残る中世城砦跡の復元が積極的に行われ、史跡としての様相が一変しつつあった。復元した遺跡の一部に建てられる予定の建物には、国際的な規模の行事などが行われるようなホールが含まれている。またサン・ズザンヌやランジェの中世中期城砦の内部壁面に新しく、ロッシュ城に設けられている鉄製階段をモデルにした、最上層まで上るための階段が設置されて、3層ないし4層構造からなる、この時期の城砦の構造を非常によく理解することが出来るようになっていた。このような自治体が主導する中世考古学遺跡の整備は、今後とも積極的に行われていくであろうことが予想される。
