项目摘要

平成21年度は、問答法の中でも特に「自己論駁」という議論形式に的を絞って考察を進めてきた。まずは、(i)プロタゴラスの人間尺度説が自己論駁に陥ることを示す『テアイテトス』169-171の有名な議論を取り上げ、証明の構造を再構成して議論の理解を深めることに努めた。次に、(ii)アリストテレスが矛盾律の疑いえなさを論証した『形而上学』Γ巻第3章の議論を取り上げ、従来の解釈に反して当該の箇所が自己論駁批判として読めることを示した。研究の結論は概ね以下のようなものである。(i)プラトンによって理解された人間尺度説は、いかなる現れも互いに矛盾することはないとするきわめてラジカルな相対主義だった。この尺度説の信奉者を名乗るプロタゴラスには、それゆえ、他の前提との矛盾を指摘するという通常の論駁方法は通用しない。尺度説にしたがえば、それらは実際には矛盾しないことになってしまうからである。ところで、他の前提によって尺度説の誤りを証明できないのなら、尺度説の肯定そのものからその否定を引き出すしかないだろう。もし尺度説を信じているなら尺度説を信じていない。このような論証方式は、それゆえ、ラジカルな尺度説を主張する論者に対してとりうる唯一可能な対処方法であったと推定できる。(ii)矛盾律の否定を信じるなら,矛盾律の肯定も信じなければならない。しかし,もし矛盾律の肯定を信じるのなら,その否定を同時に信じることは不可能となる。アリストテレスは、矛盾律の否定がこのように自己論駁へと帰着するために、矛盾律がそれ自体としてそれについて間違うことが不可能な原理であり、またもっとも強固な原理であると論定している。
