研究目的は、ナイジェリア・ハウサ社会において、養子縁組と里親養育の混交形と言える「リコ」という慣行の実態を明らかにし、血縁原理を超えた当該社会の動態的かつ柔軟な親子・家族形態を明らかにすることである。平成21年度は、従来の研究において議論が不十分であった以下2点、1.成人後の「子」と育ての親(以下育親と表記)と生みの親(以下生親と表記)間における交流、2.育親と生親による実践的な子育て関与のあり方、について明らかにし、成果を発表することが主な目的であった。研究実施計画に沿い、5月に日本アフリカ学会にて上記1に関する口頭発表を行った。また新たに、9月に国際シンポジウム(京都)、および3月の日本発達心理学会・公募シンポジウムにおいて、上記2に関する口頭発表を行った。論文の投稿は、22年度6月までに上記2に関して日本文化人類学会に投稿する。計画していた2～3ヶ月間の補足調査は、「優秀若手研究者海外派遣事業」の支援により、4ヶ月間(11月～3月)行うことができた。期間の延長により、発表等で指摘された不足点(リコの普及性、調査村と都市部のリコの相違比較など)の補充に限らない、資料の質の向上ができた。例えば聞き取り回数の増加により、資料の確実性や具体性を増強できた。また一人の「子」に関して複数の関係者に聞き取りをし、多面的にリコを捉えることができた。このような質的に充実した事例研究により、従来の機能主義的議論で欠如していた「実践」における多様性と柔軟性を明らかにした。それにより育親と生親による複合的な子育て方法(上記2)や、成人後の「子」と育親・生親双方との長期的互助関係(上記1)が提唱できる。本研究は、「子育て」行為の多様なあり方の提示や、アフリカ文化理解の促進のほか、固定的親子関係が主流で、子育てや親子に関する社会問題が噴出する現代日本を再考する好材料となる点でも重要である。
