A Study on Gagaku in Modern Japan

This study focused on the unique role of gagaku held in modern Japan : (1) relationship between gagaku and imperial ancestor worship in the modern era ; (2) relationship between gagaku and creation of modern songs such as shoka (school songs) and gireika (ceremonial or ritual songs sung on national holidays) ; (3) transmission of gagaku, domestically and internationally, through public performances and international exhibitions ; (4) dissemination of gagaku through Shinto shrine worship in the modern era. Major results of this study were published in The Meiji Government and Gagaku (Yushisha, 2009) and in Shiba Fujitsune's Diary Written in the Fourth Year of Meiji (1871), Reprint and Annotation (Kaken-hokokusho, 2011), reprinting and annotating a section of a gagaku musician's diary.
