The formation process of Okinawan Eis dances-an analysis of the 'te-odori' (hand dance) style

This project researched 'Te-odori' (hand dance) eis?, a little-known dance style found in the northern part of the Okinawan mainland that is quite different to the better-known drum-accompanied eis? styles. The study verified current transmission in some 60 villages and, based on differences in song titles, lyrics, and performance styles, identified a number of distinct lineages and regional variations. The recent adoption of stage arts and popular songs, and the strong influence of modern Eis? drumming styles since the 1980s, places te-odori eis? in the context of a dynamic modern performing arts world.
