The old Japanese and Chinese books of Yamaguchi University in the General Library, in the Faculty of Humanities and in the Institute of East Asian Economic Affairs of the Faculty of Economics, were inherited from the predecessing schools of these departments : the Meirinkan, the Yamaguchi Meirinkan of the Hagi Mori Clan, as well as the Esshi-juku, Yamaguchi High School of Commerce and Higher School (pre-war). Since Yamaguchi University was founded under the New University System in May 1949 the collection has been furthermore extended by the Collections of Seisokudo of the Tokuyama Mori Clan, the several historical materials donated by common people, and by donations from book collectors like Shiran Wakatsuki, Chijoh Akamatsu, Munenao Shikuma, Ryosuke Asayama and others. This collection which was actively accumulated by the efforts of the library pioneers has been thoroughly investigated and the results published as the "Classified Index of Japanese-Chinese Classical Books in the Yamaguchi University".

山口大学总图书馆、人文学院和经济学院东亚经济研究所的旧日文和中文书籍，都是从这些系的前身学校继承而来的：美林馆、萩森家族的山口美林馆、山口商学高中和高等学校（战前）的诗宿。自1949年5月山口大学在新大学制度下成立以来，该收藏进一步扩大了德山森家族的地震堂收藏，平民捐赠的一些历史资料，以及像若摫志兰，赤松千丈，石马年雄，浅山良介等藏书家的捐赠。这是图书馆先行者们积极积累的藏书，经过深入的调查，并以“山口大学日汉典籍分类索引”的形式出版。
