Communication Skills Training Using the Empathy Index Along With Microcounseling

The purpose of this study is to develop a communication skills training method for nursing students using empathic understanding,which is the empathy index,along with microcounseling. In the clinical nursing situation,empathic understanding plays a vital role in establishing the nurse-patient relationship. Four skills, which are the construction factors of empathic understanding :(1.Acceptance Skill 2.Reflective Skill Regarding Emotions and Meaning 3.Verbalization Prompting Skill 4.Confirmation Skill)were performed in role-play interviews conducted by the subject. Interviews were video taped while the subject conducted the role - play interviews were evaluated by six evaluators, using the empathic understanding scale and data was collected.The communication skill training method using empathic understanding, along with the microcounseling technique, was established as an effective communication skills training method for nursing students to improve in their ability to use the four skills in communicating.F(4,87)=51.14,p<0.001.
