語には多義のものが少なくないが,その語義がどれも等しく現れているとは信じられていない。例えば,動詞・四段活用「立つ」の意味として優勢であるのは,万葉集・古今和歌集では雲・風・月などの自然現象が現れること,枕草子・紫式部日記では人が立ち上がること,大鏡では后・春宮の位に昇ることである。しかも,語の出現頻度はこれまでによく取り上げられてきたものの,語義ごとの頻度はほとんど知られていない。古典文芸に現れる約2万4千語について,語義がどのように現れているかを組織的に調べようとするのが,この研究の目的である。本年度は,中頻度・低頻度の語を中心に処理した。前年度に処理の中心とした高頻度の語も含めて,全体的に,語義は次のような偏りの傾向を見せる。(1)上の「立つ」のように,作品によって異なりながらも,偏るところが違う。(2)「日(ひ)」が多く暦のものであり,「月(つき)」が多く天体である,というように,作品によらずに一様に偏る。(3)語義の偏りは,前後に共起する語にしばしば支えられる。この研究で扱わなかった諸作品も併せ見るならば,この(2)は(1)に吸収されることになるかもしれない。その見極めは,今後の展開によらなければならない。ただし,語義の現れかたに偏りがあることは確実であるので,それによって作品を特徴づけるとことも,可能となるであろう。なお,「風(かぜ)」は自然現象に大きく偏る。しかし,病気の語義ももつ多義語であるか,あるいはそれぞれ単義の別語であって語義の偏りの問題から外れるか,という問題がある。また,辞典では語義が整然と分けられるが,実際には幾つかの語義に亘ると理解されることがある,という問題もある。今後,語義の概念を新たに理論化したい。
