The aim of this study was to verify the validity of the generalization about the correlation between formal markedness and functional specialization (abbreviated as "FMFS") proposed by Konno (2005) : If a grammatical form is marked with reference to the grammatical convention of a given language, then the function of that form is more specialized than that of the corresponding unmarked form(s). Investigating the English middle construction and the Japanese adjectival conjugational ending drop construction, the study showed that the two constructions give further credence to the FMFS.

本研究的目的是验证Konno（2005）关于形式标记性和功能专门化之间关系的概括（简称“FMFS”）的有效性：如果一个语法形式是参照一种语言的语法惯例标记的，那么该形式的功能比相应的无标记形式的功能更专门化。通过对英语中动结构和日语形容词词尾连缀结构的考察，研究表明，这两种结构进一步证实了FMFS。
