项目摘要

本研究の目的はclearに代表される除去動詞(verbs of removal)の所格交替(locative alternation)に関して、動詞と前置詞句との共起関係の変遷を通時的に考察すること及び非交替動詞が交替するような例外的現象を分析することにより、従来構文研究においてあまり関心が払われてこなかった周辺的な事象に焦点を当てることにある。当該年度は動詞cleanと前置詞from/ofとの共起関係の史的変遷について調査を行った。cleanは語源的にはゲルマン祖語に遡ることができるため、古英語にも存在したが、古英語cleanは形容詞用法と副詞用法のみであり、動詞用法が登場するのは15世紀以降である。よって、EEBO(Early English Books Online)とCOHA(The Corpus of Historical American English)を用いて動詞cleanが前置詞from/ofと共起する用例を収集し、動詞の補部構造のパターンにより４つのタイプに分類した。そして収集したデータをEEBOは1500年から1699年までの期間を50年区切りで四期に分け、COHAは1820年から2019年までの期間を同じく50年区切りで四期に分け、それぞれ４つのタイプごとに用例数を集計し、初期近代英語期から現代英語期にかけての各タイプごとの使用の変遷を明らかにした。集計結果を前年度に調査を行った動詞clearの補部構造の発達と比較した結果、歴史的にclearのプロトタイプ的構造がcleanにおいてはほとんど発達しなかったことが明らかとなった。またこれに関してはcleanとcleanseとの意味競合の歴史が関わっている可能性について調査を行った。
