项目摘要

本年度は、古代アジア世界の対外交渉に仏法が与えた役割を追究、かつ、南北朝～隋・唐代にかけての皇帝の受菩薩戒に着目し、中国における王法と仏法の関係を分析するとともに、皇帝の受菩薩戒が8世紀における天皇の受菩薩戒に与えた影響を考察した著書を発表した。しかし、中国における王法と仏法との関係を通史的に理解するには、仏教伝播以降の状況についても整理しておく必要がある。そこで報告者は、王法と仏法の関係を遡って解明するため、3世紀以降の中国における阿育王信仰について整理した。その結果、南北の分裂期に、仏教が、王朝の正当性を強化する役割をしばしば果たしていたことが明らかになった(「阿育王伝説与江南諸帝」)。また、中林隆之氏によって提唱された、「『師友』関係」を軸とした外交的折衝という視点をより広い範囲に適用、国家の枠組みを超えて存在していたかのように見える僧侶間の個人的な師友・同学関係が、時として国家の対外政策を補完する役割を担っていたのであり、そのような諸国間交渉は、古代・中世アジアの広い範囲で行われていたことを確認した(「古代アジア世界の対外交渉と僧侶」)。さらに、仏教を鍵として構築された外交関係の特徴を把握するため、南北朝～隋・唐代の「冊封体制」について調査した。その結果、南朝が冊封・除授による国際秩序維持に熱心であったのに対し、北朝・隋・唐では冊封・除授が南朝ほどには重視されていなかったのであり、南朝の冊封体制下にあった日本が隋・唐から冊封されなかったことについては、そのような南北の差異を踏まえて再検討を加えるべきであることを指摘した(「隋唐の国際秩序と倭国」)。以上、旧稿よりも時代的・地域的に広い範囲を対象として、王法と仏法、外交交渉と仏教の関係を解明することに努めたというのが報告者の研究概要である。
