本年度は、仏教が(1)古代・中世アジアの対外交渉、(2)王権に与えた影響ついて、以下の研究を行った。-1・隋代以降、対等な関係の樹立を目的として倭国は中国の冊封を拒否したと解する先行研究に対し、北朝―隋―唐では冊封による国際関係を王朝間で継承するということは行われてはおらず、北朝に冊封された痕跡のない倭国を、隋・唐が冊封する歴史的な必要性があったかは疑問であると指摘した。・日本古代史においては、僧侶間、乃至僧侶―俗人間の師友・同学関係が東アジア諸国間で築かれており、それを前提とした外交折衝が行われたとする研究がある。しかし、往来する僧侶が国境を越えた交友関係を取り結び、かつ、そのような交友関係を通じて外交意思が伝達されるということは、仏教を受容したアジアの各地で行われていた。本年度は、特に唐代を取り上げ、諸国を往来する僧侶や、僧侶の活動を支えた寺院にどのような対外交渉上の役割が期待されたのかを明らかにした。・梁職貢図の題記には使者の名称など正史にはない情報が含まれており、また諸国の使者図は、諸国の風俗ではなく、諸国使が朝貢に至った様子を描いていることを整理した。-2・九世紀に清和天皇が菩薩戒を受けたことについて、清和より以前の九世紀の日本では、天皇家の崇仏において密教灌頂が重要な役割を果たしたことを指摘した上で、地震など天災が打ち続く中、史上初の幼帝の即位を見据えて天皇の受菩薩戒が再び導入されたことを明らかにした。・ベトナムの隋大業14年「大隋九眞郡寳安道場之碑文」について、碑文調査を実施、新たな録文を作成した。その上で、中国諸王朝から愛州刺史を拝命した碑文建立者は、中国との関係を利用しつつ、愛州を中心とする地域に確固たる勢力を維持したと見るべきことを述べた。
