相手の気持ちに則って自分の行動を適切に決めるためには「なぜ相手はこう言ったのだろう・したのだろう」と自発的に考える態度が重要である(佐藤,2010)。そこで本研究では,子どもが「相手の気持ちを自発的に知ろう」とすることの発達と,それに関わる要因を明らかにした。本研究では,自分のしたいことに反対する相手を説得する場面を対象とした。相手が「犬はだめ」といった時,「何でだめなの?」と聞くことができれば,「相手の気持ちを自発的に知ろう」としていると見なせるとした。「何でだめなの?」と相手に聞くには,(1)「何でだめなの?」と聞くと相手の反対理由が分かる,そして(2)相手が1つのものに対して複数の信念を持ちうることを理解する必要があると考えられる。そこで,この2つの理解のどちらが「相手の気持ちを自発的に知ろう」とすることを促すのかを検討した。年中児,年長児,1年生,2年生を対象とし,(1)を促す群(会話群),(2)を促す群(複数信念群),(1)も(2)も促す群(会話複数信念群),そして(1)も(2)も促さない群(統制群)を設け,「相手の気持ちを自発的に知ろう」という態度が促されるかを検討した。その結果,小学校2年生は教授しなくても,「何でだめなの?」と自発的に相手の反対理由を知ろうとしていた。さらに,年齢に関わらず,(1)と(2)の教授を両方とも行わないと,「何でだめなの?」と相手に聞けるようにはならないことが示された。これらのことから,「何でだめなの?」と相手の反対理由を聞こうするためには,会話を予測することと他者が持ちうる信念を理解することをそれぞれ理解し,それを同時に考慮する必要があることが示された。
