本研究は、ランボーの詩がもつ強いイメージ喚起力に焦点をあて、詩表現そのものに内在する絵画性を文体論および記号論的アプローチから解明することを目的とする。詩的言語の働き方と絵画の表現構造の共鳴を探り、19世紀後半から20世紀初頭にかけての詩と絵画の関係の変遷という広い視野から、ランボー詩の言語記号の自律が絵画の分野での線と色彩という記号の働き方の刷新に先行し、影響を与えているという領域横断的な考察を提示する意義を持つ。本年度はまず、ランボーのイメージ造形が、昨年度考察したロマン主義的ピトレスク詩、および高踏派の詩の絵画的イメージ造形とどう違うのか分析した。その結果、それら先行詩人の手法を学んだ上でその主観性を批判し、当時の政治戯画といった同時代の視覚イメージの暗喩に満ちた表象の2層構造を意味伝達のレベルにおいて抽出し、手法に取り込むことで、語る自己を巧みに隠し、意味伝達記号として自律した言語表現が喚起するイメージが浮き上がる表現構造が構築され、それが詩的イメージの視覚性を強め、ランボー詩に内在する絵画性を形成していることが明らかになった。ついで、ランボー詩における言葉という記号の革新的使用方法がどの程度後世に認識されていたのか、詩人のみならず画家にも具体的な影響が見られるかを検討した。既に先行研究のある19世紀末の象徴主義の再評価を確認した上で、20世紀初頭の受容に注目し、キュビスムの画家、ロジェ・ド・ラ・フレネが詩人コクトーを通してランボーの詩を知り、『イリュミナシオン』に挿絵をつける予定で制作した版画の存在に着目した。画家のカタログ・レゾネにも載っていない、フランス国立図書館に所蔵されている貴重なリトグラフを参照し、キュビスムと抽象の間で揺れる画家の創作上の進化の過程でランボー詩に対する考察が大きな意味を持っていたことを見出した。その成果をカナダの学会にて発表した。
