本研究が取り上げる時期の地中海世界は、多様な宗教思想が受容と対立を繰り広げたという点で、現代の写しとも言いうる世界であった。なかでも、ヘレニズムとヘブライズムという異なった宗教伝統の接触は相互に大きな影響を及ぼし合ったが、特にキリスト教の思想形成におけるプラトニズムの影響は決定的であるとともに現代まで尾を引く葛藤をももたらしている。しかし、その内実については、やはり宗教学的見地からの研究が特に不足している状況があった。そこで、本研究では、プラトニズムとキリスト教の思想的接触を鮮やかに体現したプロクロス-新プラトン主義の「最後の光輝」とされる5世紀の思想家-および、偽ディオニュシオス-キリスト教のとりわけ神秘主義に大きな影響を与えた神学者-を取り上げ、両者の宗教思想を彼らの著作に基づいて比較考察することにより、プラトニズムとキリスト教との相互作用を明らかにすることを目的とした。それとともに、堅実な文献の検討を基盤としながら現代の情報学が持つ手法も採り入れ、宗教思想の比較に必要な方法論を再構築することを目的とした。具体的には、まず本研究の原点としてプラトンの『ティマイオス』や『法律』第10巻といった著作において宗教的側面を改めて精査し、また新プラトン主義者プロクロスの『ティマイオス注解』について検討を行った。なお、研究機関の中途(平成21年9月)において、身分異動に伴い日本学術振興会特別研究員(PD)を辞退することとなったため、この研究は平成22年度科学研究費補助金若手研究(B)「神秘主義をめぐるプラトニズムの宗教思想史とその方法論」において成果発表を含め継続することとなった。
