In this research project we want to concentrate on two very important aspects of current database research:-Information Integration using XML and object-relational technology-Adaptation of DBMS processing capabilities to client/server environments. These research topics are getting more important, mainly because of the following two reasons. First, due to the new SQL-standard (especially the object-oriented enhancements in SQL: 1999 there is a growing need to combine XML (XSQL), relational technology and object-oriented technology within so-called object-relational DBMS. Second, any merge of object-oriented and relational technology has to take also a merge of client and server processing capabilities into consideration. The reason for the latter point is that object-oriented DBMS have been designed especially for client/server environments with much design emphasis put on the client part, whilst most relational DBMS were devised having a server DBMS in mind.
