Cultural conflict and self-other perception in modern European history: memory, record, archives

The project has focused on the historical aspect of modern European perception and construction of self-other identity, with special reference to memory, record and archives. Made up of twelve historians in the front-line, it has tried to emphasize not the endogenous genealogy of knowledge but the encounter and exchanges with 'the other' and the eventual building up of encyclopedic knowledge and wisdom based upon the humanist and enlightenment sources. Historical and intellectual will to generality and publicness was significant. The project members have wished to overcome the intellectual compartmentalization to date and to acquire a good perspective for the humanities of the twenty-first century.The project has been an inspiring and profitable experience, but three years are not sufficient to finish our good products. Some years to come will see not only our academic articles and books but also outreach activities to the public.
