Die Klasse Aves ist durch eine Vielfalt von Life-History-Strategien gekennzeichnet, die von kurzlebigen Singvögeln bis zu langlebigen Greif- und Seevögeln reicht. Die Evolution dieser Strategien wird noch wenig verstanden. Im Rahmen des Projektes möchte ich funktionelle und mechanistische Aspekte der Brutinvestitionen von Seevögeln untersuchen, insbesondere am Modell von Dünnschnabel-Walvögeln "Pachyptila belcheri". Dazu benutze ich eine Kombination von Methoden aus der Verhaltensökologie, molekularer Ökologie, Endokrinologie sowie Bioakustik, die eine Serie von experimentellen Untersuchungen zu Life-History-Strategien dieser Vögel ermöglicht. Schwerpunkt ist dabei der evolutionäre Interessenkonflikt zwischen Eltern und Nachwuchs. Es soll ermittelt werden, ob und wie die Küken von Seevögeln durch ihr Bettelverhalten die Fütterraten beeinflussen und wie Küken-Eltern-Interaktionen hormonell gesteuert werden. Diese Informationen ermöglichen es zu untersuchen, ob die intra- und interspezifische Variation bei Fütterungs- und Wachstumsstrategien von Seevögeln durch hormonelle Mechanismen erklärbar ist. Das Projekt soll weiter Hypothesen zur Evolution von Bettelverhalten als ein "ehrliches Signal" in Küken-Eltern-Interaktionen testen. Ich werde prüfen, ob Küken mit intensiverem Betteln Qualität signalisieren, da mit starker Hormonproduktion Handicaps verbunden sind (z.B. Immundepression).
