本研究では、焦点に関わる統語的及び意味的諸相を明確にするために、それらに関連する焦点小辞を中心に検証することを目的とした。消滅の危機に瀕している琉球諸語における焦点に関わる現象の詳細な観察(課題(1))によって、焦点と文構造とのインターフェースの理論構築につとめた(課題(2))。そのために八重山語の3つの方言(宮良方言、白保方言、川平方言)の現場調査を行った。本研究の調査では、この方言によっての自然対話を録音し、その書き起こしを行いながら各方言の特徴を調べた。録音データの公開と保存のために、京都大学の研究室のデータベースに格納した。録音データはあわせておよそ30時間のものとなった。焦点される品詞に伴う係り助詞「どぅ」は琉球語の多くの方言で見られるが、本研究で調べた方言の自然対話に特に頻繁に出てくる。係り助詞「どぅ」といわゆる「係り結び」という現象に関するデータを集めるために、自然対話の他に方言話者と文法調査も行った。宮良方言の調査では、その方言の「どぅ」の以下の特徴が分かった:(1)「どぅ」が出る時には、述語の接尾辞「ん」が使えなくなる。(2)「どぅ」は基本的に一つの文では一つしか使われないが、例外もある。(3)「どぅ」は強調される品詞にも疑問詞にも付くけど、協調される品詞・疑問詞がいわゆる「島」の中に入っている場合、「どぅ」は島の後に付く。しかし、強調される品詞・疑問詞が関係節の主語である場合、例外的な使い方もある。(3)の例外と(2)の条件に反する例外は同じような環境で起こるので、関係があるように思われる。以上の3つの特徴をまとめて説明するために、統語論上の仮設を立てた。「どぅ」と「ん」が出る文の意味的特徴もこの構成によって自然に計算することが出来ることを示し、文法上の特徴と意味上の特徴に必然的な関係があると主張した。
