霊長類種において集団に属する個体は集団内採食競合や遊動に関する問題等の不利益と、資源防衛や被食回避といった利益を同時に享受している。ニホンザルはまとまりの良い集団を形成するが、一方で雄個体が一時的に集団を離れる可能性が示唆されている。集団と共に遊動するかどうかの選択に影響する要因を明らかにすることは、集団形成の意義を考察する上で重要である。本研究では先ずニホンザル雄個体による一時離脱行動の存在を確認することを目的とした。その上で一時離脱に影響する要因を特に採食戦略の観点から検証し、集団に属する利益と不利益の考察を目指した。日本南西部に位置する屋久島に生息するニホンザル(Macaca fuscata yakui)を対象とした。二人の調査者による二個体同時追跡を実施し、個体の位置と行動を記録した。雌雄はしばしば数百m以上離れることがあり、離れた雄の周囲に他個体がいることは稀であった。以上から雄の一時離脱行動が確認された。また雌雄間距離が100m以上となった場合を雄の離脱行動と定義した。雄は集団のメンバーからは離脱するが集団の遊動域からは離れておらず、遊動域の周縁部や他群と頻繁に出会う場所を避ける傾向にあった。離脱した雄が集団間競合に対して脆弱になる可能性がある。一方で離脱した雄は遅い速度で長い時間採食しており、この差は葉よりも果実において顕著であった。離脱した雄は集団内採食競合を回避している可能性がある。また被攻撃頻度が高く親和交渉においても不利な低順位の雄ほど長時間、頻繁に離脱していた。低順位の雄が、集団内での採食上、社会交渉上の不利を離脱によって補償している可能性がある。これはニホンザルの戦略の新しい側面である。ニホンザルの雄が集団と遊動するか否かを社会的文脈に応じて柔軟に選択している可能性が示唆された。
