项目摘要

本年度も日本学術振興会特別外国人研究員としての研究テーマである『Through the Hospital Gates : Hansen's Disease and Modern Japanese Literature』を仮タイトルとして書籍化に向け研究を進めている。そして二〇一三年十一月にはHealth, Culture, and Societyという査読つき学術雑誌にて私が執筆した『Contested Histories and Happiness : Leprosy Literature in Japan』が出版された。他の出版した論文もいくつかある。口頭発表の活動も続けた。たとえば、『戦前日本のハンセン病療養所に短歌の交流―九州療養所での病と空間の経験―』(仮タイトル)が二〇一四年五月の『ハンセン病市民学会年報』に掲載される予定である。学会発表等も多数行ってきた。二〇一三年十二月一日には日本近代文学会(日本大学, 東京)にて『長島愛生園の女性たち―ジェンダー、ヒロインと一九三〇年代にハンセン病療養所』という発表をしたそして二〇一三年の九月にベルギーで開催された18th International Leprosy Congressでは『Toward a Literature of Human Rights : Leprosy, Hansen's Disease, and Japanese Patient Writing』という口頭発表を行った。ハンセン病文学、あるいは従来の癩文学というジャンル名は、医学的進歩や元患者の人権運動の活動を反映していることを指摘し、これらの呼称にも深い意味があると論じた。また、二〇一四年一月に京都大学で行われた国際シンポジウムChildhood, Education and Youth in Imperial Japan, 1925-1945にて、『For the Good of the Family : The Experience of Japanese Hansen's Disease Hospitals through the Writings of Children』という口頭発表をしたのまた、同年三月三十にAssociation for Asian Studies Annual Conferenceで私が主催するパネルで『Patient Poetry in Japanese Leprosaria and Theories ot Leprosy Literature」という口頭発表をした。ここでは、入所者と医師の短歌、および評論を通して、ハンセン病文学の機能、意味、文学の多様性を考察した。とくに、患者が論じた「レプラ文学芸」と医師であった内田守人が唱えた「癩文学」の入所者文学の理論を詳しく議論した。

"The exchange of short songs in the former Japanese sanatorium-the space of illness in Kyushu sanatorium"() was published in the "Annual Report of the Public Association for the Treatment of Diseases" in May 2014. On December 1, 2013, the Japanese Modern Literature Association (Nihon University, Tokyo) presented an oral presentation entitled "Toward a Literature of Human Rights : Leprosy, Hansen's Disease, and Japanese Patient Writing" at the 18th International Leprosy Congress, September 2013.
