前年度の研究計画を延長し、外交官として非キリスト教圏の極東に長く滞在し、現地で布教活動に励む宣教師との交流を通して形成されるポール・クローデルの宣教観を検討する作業を継続した。それに並行して、政教分離が進行する第三共和政下に信仰を堅固なものとするべく同胞に向けて行った宣教行為の実践を把握する作業を行った。一つ目の作業に関しては、前年度に収集した史料と、今年度実施したバチカン福音布教省史料室、バチカン国務省史料室、バチカン福音布教省資料室にて収集した史料を基にして、クローデルと日本のカトリック宣教の問題を主題に論文を投稿した（論文２）。二つ目の作業に関しては、第一に、クローデルが外交官として行ったプロパガンダ著作物と、戯曲『1914年のキリスト聖誕祭の夜』を参照しつつ、作家における第一次世界大戦の意義と、戦争が作家の創作活動や信仰心に与えた影響を検討した（論文１、発表１）。この戦争の元凶を信仰の分裂に見出すクローデルは、「宣教＝世界の統一を謳うカトリック信仰を世界各地にひろめること」にこそ平和実現の道があると考えていたことを確認した。第二に、1920年代にヨーロッパで起きた、「東洋」と｢西洋｣の差異や接近可能性を議論した<東洋/西洋>論争におけるクローデルの位置づけを検討した。当時、駐日フランス大使を務めていたクローデルは、日本やフランスにおいて<東洋/西洋>の差異や相似性を題材とした講演を行うことを求められたり、インタビューに答えるなど、「東洋」や「西洋」の紹介者としての役割を果たしていた。これらのインタビューや講演原稿、とりわけ「日本人の心を見る目」に注目し、世界各地に駐在して多様な文化を目にしてきたクローデルが、世界の単一性を信じる根拠のひとつに宣教を挙げていることを確認した。この成果は博士論文に組み入れたほか、来年度以降、論文を投稿する予定である。
