私たちが何かについて考えるとき、細部に着目し対象を具体的に解釈する（「木を見る」）こともあれば、全体像に着目し対象を抽象的に解釈する（「森を見る」）こともあるだろう。人間は抽象的解釈と具体的解釈の間を行き来しつつ自らの認知・行動を制御している。本研究では、「木を見たり森を見たりする」ことに応じて、他者を理解する経験（対人認知）がいかに変動するかを検討してきた。2015年度の成果について、主だったものを以下に記載する。1．解釈の抽象度が対人認知を変動させるプロセスを、経験サンプリング法と呼ばれる手法（数日間にわたってランダムな時刻に人々の経験をスマートフォンを通じてサンプリングすることによって人々の経験全体の性質を推測するために用いられる手法）を用いて検討を行った。その結果、人々の日常生活において、他者との距離感に応じて解釈の抽象度が変動すること（疎遠な他者とともに行う行為は抽象的に解釈される）、そしてその変動を表象対象（主に自己について考えるか他者について考えるか）が調整することが示された。2．研究の応用的意義の確認として、DV (Domestic Violence）状況における検討を行った。これまでの多くの研究は、解釈の抽象度に応じて他者との距離を縮められるか（共感・利他的行動の促進条件の特定）を中心に検討してきた。しかし、本研究は、人が（望ましくない）他者から距離を取るための条件を検討した。その結果、抽象的解釈を通じてDVに対する脆弱性が低減する可能性が示された。3．解釈の抽象度が人々の実際の利他的行動に与える影響について追加的に実験的検討を行った。解釈の抽象度を抽象カテゴリー/具体例生成課題によってプライミングし、その後の利他的行動を測定した。その結果、自己（他者）の行為を中心的に想起する際には抽象（具体）プライミングが利他的行動を促進することを明らかにした。
