本研究は、近代以前/以降における中国人の認識様式の変化について、主に中国人の分類様式に着目し、そのケーススタディとして小人と巨人への眼差の変化を考察するものであった。これまでの研究では、清末に刊行された新聞・画報の見世物記事を主な資料に、小人症・巨人症の人物に対する眼差の変化を調査した（問題の中核となったのは現代中国において看取される、小人・巨人を一対の関係と見なす眼差の生成時期であった）。今年度は同様の問題意識から、短躯と長躯（小人と巨人）がペアとなるビン地域の無常鬼（七爺八爺）に着目し、その成立過程の解明を目指した。ただし、実際に実行できたのは、その前段階の議論と見なすべき「無常鬼二元説」への批判にとどまった（つまり、七爺八爺の上位概念である無常鬼全般にまとう二元性に対する批判である）。その成果は、“Re-examining the duality of the Wuchang Gui 無常鬼：Images of the Wuchang Gui based on the illustrations of the Dian shi zhai Hua bao『点石斎画報』”（発表）、「『点石斎画報』に描かれた無常鬼たち―白無常と黒無常の非二元性に着目して―」（論文）として、日露ワークショップ及び『国際文化研究』にて発表・掲載された。上述の通り、当初の設問は未解明とはなった。しかし、本年度は台湾での調査（七爺八爺の歴史を考察する上で最重要資料となる『玉歴鈔伝』の版本調査や、廟祠や迎神賽会において看取される七爺八爺の神像をめぐる調査）を実施し、問題解決に向けて着実に歩みを進めることができた。本調査に基づく成果は、「『玉歴鈔伝』の諸本から考える無常鬼表象の変遷」（仮題）、「七爺八爺の生成原理―なぜビン地域の黒無常は短躯なのか―」（仮題）として近く発表予定である。
