今年度は４本の論文が査読付き国際雑誌に受理された。その中のひとつの研究の概要は以下の通りである。近年のWal-Martなどの巨大な小売企業の登場によって、強い小売企業が小売価格や消費者厚生、ひいては社会厚生に与える影響に対する競争政策上の関心は高まっている。実際、Galbraith (1952)の議論から数多くの研究が行なわれているが、この議論の着目点は、メーカーなどの川上企業に対する相対的な「強さ」が消費者に対する価格にどのような影響を与えるかという点である。この研究では支配的小売企業の二つの役割を明示的に組み込み分析を行った。ひとつは市場の価格決定者としての役割、もうひとつは、支配的小売企業が扱う財は高い信頼(需要)を得ることができるというsales promoterとしての役割である。後者は本研究の新規的な設定であるが、これは有名な百貨店が扱っているとその商品は信頼できる品質であろうと考える消費者心理を表現している。主要な結果として、次の2つが得られた。(i) 支配的小売の交渉力の上昇は中間財価格を下落させ、小売価格も下落する。(ii) 小規模小売企業の増加は中間財価格を上昇させ、その結果、小売価格、消費者厚生を悪化させることがある。(i)は先行研究における、交渉力が小売価格に影響を与えないという中立命題が限定された状況でのみ成り立つことを示している。(ii)の直観は、川上企業がどちらの小売が相対的に利潤性が高いかという点が重要である。小規模小売の数が多いとき、その販路の利潤が高くなるため、川上企業は支配的小売の生産を抑制させようと高い中間財価格をつけることがある。本論文の貢献は、Galbraith (1952)以降の議論を新たな観点で説明し、市場集中度が下がっているにもかかわらず、消費者厚生が悪化する注意すべき状況があることを指摘している点である。
