项目摘要

本年度は、昨年度前に原典との比較調査を終えた、後期中世にスコットランドの貴族Sir Thomas Erskineのために書かれたThe Buik of King Alexander the Conquerour(以下The Buikとする)について、日本英文学会第89回全国大会で発表を行った。The Buik中の読者の徳育を主眼とする部分の内容を、その材源作品と比較し、同部分で理想とされた君主像が東方遠征で実現されていることを明らかにした。The Buikの推定製作年代である15世紀末、スコットランドでは若年の君主による支配が続き、伝統的な王を頂点とする身体論に基づく社会体制の揺らぎが見出された。いかなる君主がそのような時代に志向されたのかを考察する本研究は、東方という舞台を利用して、後期中世のスコットランドの貴族が自分の共同体の在り方を見つめなおしていたことを示すと言える。また、2018年3月には、The BuikにおけるAlexanderによる世界地図作成のエピソードを出発点として、文学・図像学的伝統における中世の君主観と世界地理のつながりについての論考をまとめ、博士論文執筆資格を取得した。同論文では、15世紀から16世紀において、西洋の地理観が天動説から地動説へと変化したにもかかわらず、The Buikでは古代から連綿と続く伝統のもと、君主への教訓が語られていることを示した。この指摘は、初期近世の読者が抱いた世界観・地理観の分析において有用である。また、『藝文研究』（慶應義塾大学藝文学会発行）に受理決定済の論文では、Geoffrey ChaucerのCanterbury Tales中の作品The Man of Law's Taleを取り上げ、中世のキリスト教的世界観を表す地図で中央部に描かれた、ローマの権威の揺らぎが同作品の語りに反映されていることを明らかにした。
