本研究は、現代中東のアラウィー派信徒にとって、外部に対する秘密主義の実践がいかなる意義をもつのかを解明することを目指している。ムスリムが安全保障・宗教上の理由により自らの信仰を第三者から秘匿する行為は「信仰隠し」（タキーヤ）として知られ、特にシーア派少数分派（アラウィー派、ドゥルーズ派など）の信徒が今日まで実践してきたとされてきた。しかし、各派をめぐる社会変化や派内のアクターの実践・解釈を視野に入れてその内実を問う研究はこれまで少なかった。本課題の２年目にあたる平成３０年度は、トルコ南部のアラウィー派コミュニティにおける長期の現地調査を通じたデータ収集を計画していたが、不安定な現地情勢を考慮してそれを変更し、これまでに代表者が得たデータに基づく議論の構築とそのアウトプットに専念した。現代のアラウィー派コミュニティでは、積極的な信仰実践、あるいは自派に対する過去の迫害に起因する慣習的行動として外部に対する秘匿を肯定する伝統主義的な立場と、同派独自（秘密）の教義・実践の存在自体を否定あるいは問題視し、主流派への接近を続ける改革主義的な立場への分極化が起きている、というのが議論の要旨である。その論拠としては、信徒からの聞き取り内容や同派信徒が運営する民間団体の出版物などを用いた。この研究成果は、１２月に京都で開催された地中海研究機関アジア連合の国際会議にてポスター発表を行ったほか、３月にパリで開催されたイスラーム研究の国際研究集会にて口頭発表を行った。秘密主義をめぐる派内の立場の違いに注目する本研究は、１９世紀のオリエンタリストによる先駆的な研究以来たびたび生産されてきた、「閉鎖的な共同体」という同派に対するステレオタイプに疑問を投げかけている点に最大の意義がある。
