本年度においては昨年度までの研究成果を踏まえ、それを主に二つの方向に発展させた。一つ目の方向は『エセー』のジャンル的系譜を追うものである。本研究では『エセー』』という作品の様式的起源としての書簡というジャンルに着目した。『エセー』の特徴として挙げられることの多い、一人称での語り・自由な題材・親密な語り口といった諸要素はすでにルネサンスにおける書簡に認められ、強い影響があることはすでに指摘されていた。本研究ではそういった要素が書簡ジャンルに認められるようになった理由をペトラルカの（俗語による）詩的実践との関連において探ろうとするものであり、文学における一人称主体の成立のより幅広い理解につながるものと期待される。もう一つの方向はテーマ的系譜に関するものである。モンテーニュが先行するテクストに対してとる態度を表明した表現に「私は蔵をもたない」というものがある。知識を貯めておくことをしないという意味で、すでに指摘した『エセー』の創作原理である「忘却」に通じるものだが、このように知識と財貨を同一視してそれらを死蔵することの不毛さを語るというのは古典古代以来からの常套表現（トポス）の一つとして知られている。このような常套表現はしばしば自作執筆の動機として使われてきたが、これは同時に書簡ネットワークにより形成されるいわゆる「文芸共和国」を成立させる知識論的イデオロギーでもある。本研究では『エセー』という作品を、ルネサンスにおけるいわば知識の自由主義的精神が結実したものとして読解することを試みる。これは、『エセー』という作品をルネサンスの思潮の中に位置づけることを可能にし、ルネサンスにおける思想と文学の相互影響のあり方を提示することにつながるだろう。
