昨年度に実施した実験から「Grapefruit精油の匂い吸入は拡張期血圧を上昇させ、匂い吸入による拡張期血圧の変化量と筋交感神経活動の変化量は正相関する」および「高血圧家族歴はGrapefruit精油の匂い吸入による血圧変動に影響する」という結果を得た。これらの知見をExperimental Biology 2019にて発表し、前者の結果は論文としてまとめた（The Journal of Physiological sciences）。これまでの研究結果から、「Lavender精油の匂い吸入は、血圧、心拍数および自律神経活動に影響を与える」という仮説を立て、検証した。その結果、「Lavender精油の匂い吸入は拡張期血圧および筋交感神経活動を減少させる」という結果が得られ、この知見は日本生理学会2020にて発表した。一方、先行研究において、匂いの吸入は、ストレスによって上昇するコルチゾールや副腎皮質刺激ホルモン放出ホルモン（ACTH）レベルに影響を与えることが報告されている。コルチゾールは、カテコールアミンの血管作動性応答を増加させる許容作用を持つことから、コルチゾール、ACTHおよびカテコールアミンが、匂いの吸入による血圧変動メカニズムに関与している可能性を見出し、検証実験を行った。その結果、「Grapefruit精油の匂い吸入によって拡張期血圧は上昇したが、血中コルチゾールおよびACTH濃度は減少し、カテコールアミン濃度は有意な変化を示さない」という知見を得た。この結果は、匂い吸入による循環器系および自律神経系への影響についての結果と共に、上記の雑誌に報告している。また、予備実験の実施により、Lavender精油の匂いの吸入は、ストレスや疲労による血圧、交感神経活動、コルチゾールおよびACTHの上昇を抑制する可能性を見出し、今後、本実験の実施により検証する予定である。
