项目摘要

2020年度の研究は、第3代シャフツベリ伯爵の著書『センスス・コムニス──ユーモアと機知の自由についての随筆』の分析を行った。シャフツベリは『センスス・コムニス』において「共通の感覚」（common sense）という概念を使用している。これは既存の英語表現である「常識」あるいは「普通の感覚」（common sense）とは異なる意味をもった言葉であり、シャフツベリが古代ローマ文学および近世古典学を参照して提唱したものである。古代ローマ文学に登場する「共通の感覚」（sensus communis）という表現には、共通認識を指す認識論的な用法に加えて共同体への配慮を指すより倫理的な用法が認められる。2020年度の研究では、この用法の敷衍のために用いられた古典学者たちの語彙とシャフツベリの語彙の共通点と相違点を明らかにした。シャフツベリは、古典学者から継承した理解および語彙に独自の語彙を付け足し、「共通の感覚」を人間同士の種族的な平等性に即して権利ないし利益を分配しようとする感覚、それに対応する利他的な傾向をもつ情動、それらの表現として獲得された礼儀が総合された状態として理解した。また、シャフツベリは古典および古典学から「共通の感覚」という概念を取り出し、これを英語圏における道徳哲学上の概念として提唱した。このことは、シャフツベリが「共通の感覚」の理解を上記のように拡張したことだけでなく、「共通の感覚」に近世イングランドの道徳哲学史と政治史の文脈に即した機能を与えていることからも確認できた。さらに、シャフツベリは英語の言語的文脈を利用した修辞的技法を採用することで、「共通の感覚」に関する議論をさらにイングランド的なものとして表現している。本研究ではこのことを示すために『センスス・コムニス』の言語的・修辞的側面の分析も行った。
