项目摘要

2022年度もコロナ禍の影響が長引いたため、最も重要な現地（米国サンフランシスコ湾区）への出張資料調査を実施することができなかった。そのため、Stanford University, East Asia LibraryおよびUniversity of California, Berkeley, Ethnic Studies Library等にて閲覧を予定していた資料（中国語新聞《太平洋週報》《金山時報》《少年中國晨報》）の入手が進まなかった。次善の策として。University of California, Berkeley, Ethnic Studies Libraryに連絡を取り、上記資料のマイクロフィルムの複写・購入の可能性を打診したが、同図書館の人手不足により不可能との回答であった。やむをえず2021年度に続いて、日本国内における資料収集を先行させることとして、国立国会図書館において日本語新聞『日米時事』の1940～50年代分を閲覧した。そして、その内容を分析することにより、第二次世界大戦の終了後にサンフランシスコ湾区においては、日系・中国系そしてフィリピン系の住民、特に若者の間でボーリングやバスケットボールといったスポーツを通じて、徐々に"Oriental"という共通の帰属意識が新たに芽生えつつあったことを発見した。また、戦時中に李香蘭の名で日本・中国の双方で活躍したものの、終戦に伴って「漢奸」として裁判にかけられた山口淑子が、カリフォルニアへ渡り現地の日系人社会で熱烈に歓迎された様子を検証できたが、彼女に対する中国系社会の反応は、今後の検討課題である。これらの成果を論文としてまとめる予定であったが、2022年12月に急病により入院し、退院後も自宅療養をせねばならなかったため、論文の執筆は2023年度に持ち越すことにした。
