本年度では、コーパスを用いて初期英語における自由関係節に関する調査を進め、特定の自由関係節の特徴に対してラベル付け理論に基づいた理論的分析を考案した。本年度に実施した調査では、抽出された例を目視により分類することで、自由関係節に関する様々な歴史的変化を観察することができた。興味深いのは、いくつかの文献で述べられているように、初期英語ではthatあるいは指示詞が先頭に位置する自由関係節が観察されていたが、それらはある時期に消失したということである。調査で使用したコーパスでは当該の例は自由関係節として扱われているが、実際にそれらがwhatを先頭に持つ自由関係節と同等の構文なのか、あるいは指示詞を先行詞として持つ関係節なのかは、先行研究での議論を踏まえながら、様々な面から検討する必要がある(e.g. Castillo (1994), Allen (2020))。理論的分析に関しては、先行研究など(e.g. Wu (2021))で観察されているsoeverを伴う自由関係節における二つの語順パターンと、それに関連する歴史的変化に対してラベル付け理論に基づいた分析を考案した。本研究では、本年度の調査の過程で得られた歴史的事実の一部が扱われている。この研究成果は、日本英語英文学会第32回年次大会（オンライン開催）において「英語のsoever自由関係節に関する一考察」というタイトルで発表された。
