当該年度においては、西周助訳『畢洒林氏万国公法』（1866年成立、1868年出版）や、西周助『百学連環』（1870年）、『百一新論』（1874年）、津田真道訳『泰西国法論』（1866年成立、1868年出版）等の中から、rightとobligationに「権」か「義」かではなく、その両方に「権」「義」「分」という訳語が当てられている事例を抽出し、それについての既存の様々な解釈を比較検討した。その結果、西洋におけるrightとobligation概念と東洋における「義」「分」に共通する自然法的次元をこれらの訳語に反映させたという既存の解釈の正当性を、蘭学および英学の系譜を辿ることを通して確認ですることができた。しかしその一方で、西周が権利・義務概念の相互基礎づけとすり替えによる両概念の疑似身分制的・関係主義的取り込みを行ったとする既存の解釈が、かならずしも妥当しないことを明らかにした。すなわち、西周が依拠したフィッセリングの自然法学が、それがホッブズ的な敵対的原子論ではなく、人間が社会的関係への自然的本性を有するとするグロチウス的なそれであるという相違はあるとしても、関係主義とは対立する原子論を基本とするものであること、したがって西は西洋のrightとobligation概念が東洋の「義」とは異なる概念であることを正確に理解していたこと、それゆえグロチウス的な傾斜を持つフィッセリング自然法学の影響下にあった時期の西が、権利義務概念を人間関係に定位して説明している箇所も、【関係依存的】か【関係規定的】かという対立図式を用いれば、後者の意味で関係的と解釈できること、さらには、西が前者の意味で関係主義的な権利義務概念の理解へと転換したのは、むしろフィッセリング自然法学の影響を脱して、功利主義・歴史主義的転回を経た後であることを示した。
