本課題の骨子は、江戸期の「根本説一切有部律」宣揚運動に関わった学如（1716-73）や密門（1707-88）といった真言学僧たちの著作・編纂物の実見調査である。2022年度は、以下の図書館・寺院において調査を行った（順不同）：高野山大学図書館、東京大学総合図書館、東京大学東洋文化研究所図書室、正通寺（岡山県瀬戸内市）、地蔵寺（徳島県板野郡）、松尾寺（京都府舞鶴市）、龍象寺（奈良市）、福王寺（広島市）。これらの図書館・寺院を訪れ、資料の有無を確認し、確認されたものに関しては、その資料の閲覧および電子データ化をおこなった。またそれらの解読を進めた。これらの調査の中で、もっとも大きな成果が得られたのが地蔵寺における調査である。同寺からは、これまで先行研究においてそのタイトルのみが知られるばかりで、全く行方が確認できなかった密門の『有部律異形問答』が発見された（しかも二部）。今後、同テキストの解読により本研究課題が大いに進展することが予想される。また調査した諸資料を解読することで、学如や密門らの「部派」に関する特徴的な見解が明らかになった。彼らは、漢字文化圏で最も一般的な『四分律』と、それまで殆ど顧慮されてこなかった「根本説一切有部律」を明確に区別する一方で、インドにおいて『四分律』を伝持していた法蔵部という部派と「根本説一切有部」を伝持していた説一切有部という部派との、教義や所属の違いを論じることはない。むしろ、彼らはそうした部派の一つ一つをブッダの教えという「金杖」を形成する「一枝」として捉え、違いを問題視していないようなのである。この見解は、特定の律の伝持が、その部派への全面的な帰属を意味するという現代の仏教学界で一般的な見解とは大きく異なる。彼らの見解は「部派」をいかに理解するかというシンプルかつ重要なテーマを考察する上で示唆に富むと言える。
